Social Emotional Learning is essential in the classroom!
Teaching social emotional skills such as self-confidence and empathy has become an increasingly important part of our jobs as educators.
Skills such as kindness, perseverance, self-esteem and problem-solving are essential in our daily classrooms.
I have developed a routine to teach these skills to my students. I start with SELF-CONFIDENCE to help students see themselves as confident learners.
Lesson Plan for
Self-Confidence
First to activate prior knowledge, I ask students
What does it mean to be confident?
What skills or activities do you feel confident about?
Students turn and talk to each other.
We create a list of ideas and words related to
self-confidence.
Next I read a story that provides an example of
SELF-CONFIDENCE.
My favorite story to use is Ruby the Copycat
by Peggy Rathmann.

After reading the story, we discuss
How did Ruby struggle with self-confidence?
What made her feel confident?
How did other characters help Ruby with her confidence?
How did Ruby show her self-confidence?
I ask students to provide examples from the story with sentence stems:
Ruby was/was not confident when _______
Ruby was/was not confident because ______
Confidence is important because ________
Miss Hart helped Ruby become confident when _____
To build connections between texts and characters, I read other books that discuss self-confidence.

Finally, students apply self-confidence in their own lives, by providing examples when they felt confident.
