As a teacher, you need a clear behavior plan.
There are 3 main components to a classroom behavior plan.
- You need classroom procedures and routines. Teach these explicitly. Students may need lots of practice learning to apply classroom rules and routines. Teach them just like you would any academic subject. For example, if a student didn’t know how to read a sight word, you would teach her again and have her practice. Use the same strategy with behavior! Once you have a plan, you can have students practice whenever necessary.
- Make connections with students. Get to know your students because it will help to provide support with their behavior.
REMEMBER BEHAVIOR IS A FORM OF COMMUNICATION!
Students usually misbehave due to one of the following reasons:
Attention seeking -they don’t feel connected and want attention-find a way to give them positive attention and connect with them
Power seeking-give them choices you are comfortable with so they feel in control
Work level and self-confidence-Sometimes the work is too hard or too easy or they simply don’t know what to do. Review the directions and make accommodations
Environment or basic needs-the noise level in the classroom may be too loud or a student may just be tired or hungry. Try to identify and address these needs.
Finally—-
3.Consequences -When setting up your behavior plan, decide on reasonable and logical consequences. For example, Johnny says something mean to another student. Remind him of the rule about being kind. Then have him write or draw an apology to that student. Make the consequence part of the learning.
