How do you feel about Valentine’s Day in the classroom?

To be honest, I have mixed feelings but it could be because my first day of substitute teaching was in a 5th grade classroom ON Valentine’s Day! The chaos and hormones were certainly high that day! 🤪

Since then, I’ve found ways to embrace the chaos and keep students engaged in learning with these February lesson ideas!

February Lesson Idea #1-Social Studies and Geography

Did you know Oregon’s birthday (the date it became a state) is February 14, 1859?

Since I live and teach in Oregon, I use Valentine’s day to teach about our state.

I have a resource that I use to teach students about Oregon facts, geography and the only National Park-Crater Lake!

February Lesson Plan Idea #2-Celebrate being unique!

For Valentine’s Day I also help student focus on what makes them special. We discuss character traits and talents that makes each one of us unique. We begin by describing things we love and things we can do and how we are different from our classmates.

In addition, I use the book Ruby the Copycat by Peggy Rathmann to introduce the concept of self-confidence. In the book, Ruby struggles with finding her unique qualities. Click on the picture for a literacy resource to use with this wonderful story.
