Build Reading Fluency

Hello friend,

         How do your students

       practice reading fluency?

We have all heard that the best way to become a better reader is to read! Becoming a better reader means having having excellent reading fluency.

What is reading fluency? There are three components to reading fluency!

  1. Decoding with accuracy- sounding out the words with minimal errors.
  2. Automatic processing-readers should put little effort into decoding so that they can focus on meaning-comprehension.
  3. Phrasing-readers should put the words into phrases using punctuation and expression in order to comprehend the text.

My students have many opportunities to read fiction books, non-fiction books, magazines and online articles.
However I also provide opportunities for students to play spelling and reading games. I believe games are an important part of my literacy instruction because building reading fluency should be authentic and engaging!
We play 3 different games with long and short vowels, blends and digraphs. Kids love memory, go fish and the wild card game. They also sort the words to practice distinguishing between different spelling patterns.
These games and activities are great for partner activities, literacy centers or even for independent practice.
Have fun and play games with your students to build reading fluency! The games also have worksheets for extra word work practice or a spelling assessment.
