First, to master your classroom transitions

you need to know that ineffective transitions are

  1. Too long
  2. Unstructured
  3. Unclear
  4. Inconsistent
  5. Not practiced enough

Speed of transitions

  • Transitions should be quick!
  • Bodies move and voices are quiet
  • Train your students to move quickly to maximize learning time.
  • Use a timer and set a goal.
  • Choose a song, poem or chant to set transition guidelines.

Transition structure

  • Teach your students EXACTLY how you want them to transition.
  • Be explicit-How do you want their bodies to move?
  • How do you want the transition to sound?
  • What should they do during the transition?
  • How will they know that they have completed the transition successfully?

Consistency

  • Be consistent and use your expectations EVERY TIME your students transition!
  • Post your expectations so you can refer to them-which leads me to the next important component

Practice

  • If you don’t have 100% follow through with expectations, have students practice.
  • The practice is best when it is in the moment
  • All the students can practice or if it was only a few students, just have them practice.
  • You should have high expectations with high support!
