Scoot

Fall task cards

Do you need a fun and engaging game for the whole class?

Scoot is an easy and active game that can be used to review concepts and it’s fun!

Here’s how to prepare scoot:

  1. Gather task cards. You need at least as many cards as you have students.  It’s always helpful to have a few more cards than you have students.
  2. You can make the task cards or you can purchase them and they can be about any topic!
  3. If you are making your task cards, number them or write letters on them to correspond to the recording sheet your students will use.
  4. Decide how you want your students to move around the room during the game. Students start at one location to complete their first few task cards. On your predetermined signal, they SCOOT to the next location to complete the next set of cards.
  5. Make a recording sheet and number your cards to match your recording sheet.
  6. Demonstrate how to complete the first card so the answer for card number 1 goes in answer box 1 on the recording sheet. Students do not have to complete the cards in order.
  7. Place the cards at 5-6 different locations around your room.
  8. Explain to the students how you want them to move when they hear the signal.
  9. Answer any questions and then place students at their starting spots-and SCOOT!

Why play Scoot?

Reason 1: Playing scoot is an engaging movement activity. As students are moving around the room, they are engaged in learning. They can also work together as they review the topic.

Reason 2: You can use scoot to review any concept or skill or just have fun while answering questions.

Reason 3: You can differentiate your scoot game. For example, I teach 2nd and 3rd grade so I use 2 sets of task cards during scoot. I’ll copy one set on blue and one set on yellow. My 2nd graders will use the blue set and the 3rd graders use the yellow set. I can also designate this by giving students a matching recording sheet. You can also pair up student to work together on the task cards to provide support.

Reason 4: You can watch students work and help when necessary. Since students are engaged in learning, you are freed up to support and observe students’ learning.
