Would You Rather questions for opinion writing?
Would you rather questions provide students practice with
opinion writing.
Use these steps for teaching opinion writing with would you rather questions:
Day 1:
1.Start with a whole class question.
Would you rather be a bunny or have a bunny?
2. Provide think time. I say “thumbs up when you have your opinion. “
3. Then read and display a sentence frame. Provide an example if necessary.
I would rather____ than _____ because _________.
4. Think time again. I say “thumbs up when you have your reason.”
5. At this point, have students turn and talk to share their answer.
6. After partner sharing, provide time for students to share with the whole class.
7. I do require that they use the sentence frame to provide a reason for their would you rather opinion.
8. Opinions can be recorded on an anchor chart for the next session.
Day 2:
1. Display the same question as Day 1 or the anchor chart and review the process of providing an opinion and reason.
2. Display a different would you rather question in a worksheet format.
Would you rather color eggs or color your hair?
3. Provide think time and say “Thumbs up when you have your opinion and reasons.” Require students to use the sentence frames on the worksheet.
4. Students turn and talk about their answers using the sentence frames on the worksheet. Provide time for whole class sharing.
5. Then give the students the worksheet and have them write their opinion with reasons.
6. Lesson extension: Students can illustate their opinions and all the worksheets can be bound together in a class book. Creating class books is a memorable strategy for building class community.
