Do you teach gratitude?
Research shows teaching gratitude will help students:
- focus on positive experiences
- build strong relationships
- develop empathy
- help overcome trauma
Teach gratitude in 4 steps
Go through each step. Use I am thankful prompts to encourage discussion.
Step 1: Notice-What can you observe in your life that you can be grateful for?
Step 2: Think-What do you think about why you have been given those things?
Step 3: Feel-What emotions do you experience as a result of the observations?
Step 4: Appreciate-How will you express appreciation?
When and How to Teach Gratitude?
I use gratitude prompts during morning meeting. When the students share their the answers, this helps them notice what they have to be grateful for in their lives.
As we share ideas, students can express their appreciation.
Sometimes it’s as simple as saying Thank You!
