FREE Ice Breaker to build classroom community

Do you need a FREE ice breaker to help students get to know one another?

I use ME BAGS as an ice breaker during the first week of school. However you could do this at any time because it helps students get to know one another. This activity lets each student share items (or you could use pictures of items) to answer questions about themselves.

All you need is a bag and some questions.

Here’s what I do for this fun and simple ice breaker:

Step One: Give each child a paper bag (I use brown lunch bags) that they can decorate at home or at school.

Step Two: Give each child a list of questions or items to put in the bag that helps describe them. Send the bag and the list home. Communicate to families about this activity so students can get some help.

Examples of questions: What’s your favorite food? What do you want to be when you grow up? How do spend your time at home? What’s your favorite book or movie or song?

Step Three: Put together your own ME BAG and share with the kids. This helps for several reasons. One, you can show students how to do the activity. Next, you can demonstrate how to share by using a proper voice level, pace and description of each item. Finally, this is always fun because students love to hear about their teacher. 😍

Step Four: Schedule a time to have each child return his/her bag and share the contents in front of the class. If a child needs support with the ME BAG, contact the family and see how you can help. You could also do the ME BAG in class and students could draw pictures to help answer the questions.

This activity helps build positive classroom community by

⭐allowing students a chance to share

⭐showing students what they have in common

⭐celebrating each other

⭐providing opportunity for students to listen to one another

⭐engaging everyone in meaningful connections

⭐establishing inspiration for writing or other activities

So, ready to try this fun ice breaker? Great! I have just the FREEBIE for you! Click on the picture to get questions, parent letter, and student directions. All you need are the paper bags (Sorry I can’t help you with that!) 😁
