I know that teaching classroom expectations to your students can be tricky and maybe overwhelming. Here are my TOP 3 strategies that I utilize in teaching classroom expectations.
- Teach EXPLICITLY what I want them to do. For example, when we line up. We practice the steps involved in lining up. My students know that lining up involves the following steps. Stand up Push in your chair Walk quietly to your place in line Keep your hands and feet to yourself Eyes forward and voice off This is much more detailed than saying “Line up.”
- PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE My students practice each expectation exactly as I have described it several times. Anytime after that, if students aren’t lining up exactly the way I have taught them, we stop and practice again!
- Finally, set HIGH expectations. All students can follow the directions and expect them to do so. If a student isn’t following the directions, I ask them “Please show me how to line up.” Most of the time, the student knows how and will comply.
