Kick Off the Year with a Touchdown in Place Value!

As you settle into a brand-new school year, building solid foundational skills to get your students off on the right foot is key. When it comes to place value, turning learning into a game can transform practice into fun—especially if you have football fans in your class!

Why This Football-Themed Task Card Resource Works

  • High Engagement + Low Prep
This resource includes 72 two-digit place value task cards featuring a fun football theme, complete with recording sheets, answer keys, and even Scoot-style game directions—making setup easy and your students eager to participate.
  • Comprehensive Place Value Practice
Students practice identifying ones and tens through expanded form, digit form, and word form questions—targeting a variety of key understanding levels.
  • Perfect for Review and Differentiation
Although designed for 2nd grade, these cards are also appropriate for 1st or 3rd grade students who need a little extra support or enrichment at the beginning of the year.

Game Plan for the First Week of School

1. Warm-Up (Mini-Lesson)

Start with a brief lesson reinforcing that in two-digit numbers, the left digit represents tens and the right digit represents ones Use a few sample numbers to model identifying and writing them in different forms.

2. Scoot Game – Energizing Practice

Set up the task cards around the room. Students move from card to card, answering questions on their recording sheets. Once they finish, they “scoot” to the next card—keeping energy and engagement high.

3. Mix-and-Match Stations

Create stations focusing on different formats:

  • Station A: Match the number in digit form (e.g., 47) with its expanded form (e.g., 40 + 7).
  • Station B: Match digit form to word form (e.g., “forty-seven”).
  • Station C: Quick write—students create their own.
Use cards randomly or sort them by difficulty to support differentiation.

4. Reflect and Share

Bring the class back together and discuss:

  • What format felt easiest or trickiest—and why?
  • What helped them know what tens and ones meant?
  • Celebrate progress and clarify any lingering misunderstandings.

5. Extension for Early Finishers

Challenge early finishers to:

  • Create their own place-value problems using favorite football stats (like touchdowns!).
  • Make a “reverse” task card: show the digit/word/expanded form and have a peer write the standard form.

Wrapping Up with a Winning Performance

Begin the school year by reinforcing place value with a play-packed resource that’s both structured and fun—complete with opportunities for movement, collaboration, and authentic practice. Whether you’re reviewing Scoot, rotating through stations, or facilitating peer-centered enrichment, the football-themed task cards are your goal-line defense against disengagement.
