Consistent Classroom Management

Consistency in teaching

As I heard Mel Robbins say recently, “Doing hard things will make your life easier.” We know being consistent can be hard especially when it comes to classroom managment. However we also know that being consistent will make the classroom life easier.

Research says when teachers apply rules and consequences consistently students:

  • Feel more secure-this builds positive classroom culture
  • Will learn to make better choices
  • More likely to behave appropriately
  • Can focus on learning-this IS the ultimate goal!

How can you be more consistent with classroom management?

  • Clearly define your rules and expectations–Tell students exactly what you want them to do. Think about what their body should look like and what they should sound like.
  • Implement consistent daily routines and procedures–Have a routine for everything! I mean everything!
  • Practice–When you introduce a new routine or when students aren’t following your routine-STOP AND PRACTICE. This is especially important after a break or even a long weekend.
  • Follow through with consequences–Always follow through with stated consequences for inappropriate behavior, ensuring fairness and predictability. These consequences can include practicing or reteaching the expected behaviors.
  • Positive reinforcement–Actively praise and acknowledge positive student behaviors to encourage their repetition.

Now for the hard part

To make your life-at least your teaching life-easier AND to be more consistent, take time to make a thorough plan.

  1. Write out all your routines and procedures.
  2. Be as specific as you can with lots of details
  3. Determine your signal for each routine and procedure
  4. Include students’s actions with their bodies and voices
  5. Decide how you’ll know when students have met the routine expectation
