December Math Games

December math games

We know December is a challenging time to keep your students focused. Between the excitement of winter break and the festive distractions, it’s easy for students to lose focus. But don’t worry—I’ve got a solution for you! Review previously taught content-like math facts.

Problem: Students need be engaged and review content

Playing games is one of the most effective ways to review previously learned content.

Students are engaged and they

  • learn to solve problems
  • develop social skills such as taking turns
  • build their confidence
  • are building fluency with familiar content

Solution: December Math Games!

An easy solution in the crazy month of December is holiday themed addition strategy math games. Each game focuses on at least one addition math strategy.

For example this game ⬇️ is focused on doubles facts up to 5+5.

Other strategies included in these games:

  • Doubles +1
  • Fast 9s (facts with 9s as an addend)
  • Fast 10s (facts with 10s as an addend)
  • Friends of 10 (2 addends that equal to 10).

Why play these December math games?

  • Easy to play-you only need 1 die and student game pieces
  • Every game has the same directions
  • Build social skills-students learn to take turns and problem solve
  • No prep-just print and play
  • You can send the black & white versions ⬇️ home for extra practice

How to use these games

No prep-Just print and play-choose color or black and white options

Math centers-Once you teach the game rules then students can play independently during math centers

Differentiate-The 14 games focus on different strategies so students can practice what they need

Fast Finishers-Your students who finish their independent work can play these games

One more idea

It seems like in December, there’s special events and schedule changes, so you end up with a few minutes with nothing to do. (Avoid the void for they will fill it ~Anita Archer)
