Why teach grammar?

Your day is packed with lessons, standards and curriculum, how do you have time for grammar?

Grammar has a bad rap for being boring and is often overlooked as being insignificant. However teaching grammar helps students organize their thoughts and write meaningful sentences.

When students understand what constitutes and simple or a compound sentence, for example, then they will be more confident in creating their own sentences.

First Understand that teaching grammar is essential:

1. Builds a Strong Foundation for Language Skills

Comprehending the different parts of speech lays the groundwork for mastering reading, writing, and speaking skills. It helps students comprehend how words function together to form sentences, improving overall communication abilities.

2. Enhances Reading Comprehension

When students understand parts of speech, they can decode sentences more effectively. For example, recognizing nouns and verbs helps them identify subjects and actions, making it easier to grasp the meaning of sentences and texts.

3. Improves Writing Clarity and Creativity

Knowing parts of speech helps students construct clearer and more grammatically correct sentences. It also gives them the tools to add variety to their writing by using adjectives for description and adverbs for detail.

4. Supports Vocabulary Development

Understanding the role of words in a sentence aids in vocabulary acquisition. For example, learning that adjectives describe nouns encourages students to think of more descriptive words, expanding their word bank.

5. Promotes Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving

Identifying and categorizing parts of speech in sentences develops critical thinking. It challenges students to analyze how words interact, fostering attention to detail and problem-solving skills, which are valuable in all academic areas.

Next teach grammar with specific steps

Here are specific actions to teach the 8 main parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection.

To teach each part of speech

  1. Provide a definition of the part of speech you want to teach. For example a noun is a person, place, thing, animal or idea. Create an anchor chart as a visual and create a motion for the definition to help solidfy the learning.
  2. Find examples and notice where you see nouns in everyday life.
  3. Label nouns in the classroom with sticky notes. Students could also brainstorm lists of nouns in each category to create their own anchor chart.
  4. Identify nouns in context such as in sentences. This leads to understanding of sentence structure because each sentence needs a subject-a who or what-which is a noun.
  5. Repeat these steps for each part of speech.

Finally, practice

One way to practice is to play games because it’s engaging and highly motivating. In addition, play based learning leads to better comprehension and higher retention of information. I have a resource for you that has engaging games to help you teach grammar.
