How to Teach Classroom Routines

There are 3 steps to teach classroom routines.

  1. Decide what you want the students to do and what NOT to do
  2. Teach the behaviors explicitly
  3. Reflect on students’ understanding.

Here are the details to teach classroom routines:

  1. What to do and NOT to do

Each routine has expectations and students need to know how you want them to act,

how you want the to sound and how you want the to move

Should they talk? If so, how loud?

When they move from place to place, how do you want them to move?

Discuss non-examples too because students also need to know what is NOT acceptable

Finallly, post expectations for each routine so students can refer if necessary

     2. Teach explicitly

Students need to know what to do for each part of your routine

Be as specific as possible and think about questions or problems that students might have

Each movement and each transition should be taught

    3. Practice the routine and then reflect

Teach your students the routine, and then let them practice.

Watch them and then bring them together to reflect:

Ask these questions:

What went well? What didn’t go well?
This will tell you what you need to reteach and what questions students have
